“Rhythm is the order in movement.” This is how Plato is said to have tried to describe the phenomenon of rhythm. And there is little to contradict the Greek polymath.

Percussionist Magnus Dauner has named his debut program Portrait in Rhythm. And his music is visibly characterized by the two parameters of movement and order. Magnus Dauner loves the interplay of tension and relaxation and sketches a universal picture of rhythm and all its facets and possibilities in his compositions.

This is mainly due to the fact that Dauner has discovered his love of drumming more than once. As a trained jazz drummer, he moved to South India at the age of 25, where he has since studied the extraordinary rhythms of South India on annual study trips to the Karnataka College of Percussion. In Tanzania, he learned the rhythms of traditional East African Ngoma music at the Shine Africa Academy and in Istanbul, Dauner was introduced to the Turkish and Arabic drumming tradition.

The Allgäu-born musician draws inspiration for his compositions from these trips around the world. He skillfully avoids the danger of stringing together traditional rhythms, instead interweaving the most diverse influences into a new whole.

Dauner takes the audience on a visually intense journey around the world. Characterized by the freedom of jazz, by foreign and familiar sounds and an invariably infectious enthusiasm.
